WASHINGTON – Commercial Window Shield has completed a switchable smart film installation project at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the nation’s capital.
The project, for client Silva Contracting of Laurel, Md., involved installing switchable smart film in two rooms, each with windows that separate a laboratory area from a patient area.

The smart film was installed on the interior glass of the windows. The film has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is on, the film remains clear. That would allow patients to observe lab activities. When the switch is off the switchable smart film becomes opaque, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.
The smart film installation work by Commercial Window Shield was part of a larger project at the hospital involving Silva Construction.
The company has a close working relationship with numerous construction companies like Silva. They include HITT, Davis Construction, rand construction, D Watts, Harvey-Cleary and Gilbane Building Co.
Since 1985, Commercial Window Shield has been one of the country’s leading installers of all types of window films. In addition to switchable smart film, the company is expert in security, solar control, radio frequency [RF], privacy/decorative and bird safety film installation.
Its projects over the years have included the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, O’Hare and Seattle international airports, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.
